Even though most employment relationships are at-will, employers need to understand when and how to properly terminate an employee.  Learn the importance of documenting everything related to employees in writing using specific facts rather than paraphrasing and making conclusions.  Sometimes a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) is the right course to take, and sometimes termination is warranted.  Learn the best way to navigate the termination meeting (including who and what materials should be present.)
